Personal Protection

This fourteen hour NRA certified course for men and women is an absolute MUST for anyone who has a concealed carry permit OR considers a handgun part of their personal protection plan.

This practical hands-on course offers training in the legal, physical and mental aspects of using a handgun under stress in deadly force situations. The legal ramifications of using lethal force are covered in detail by a sworn law enforcement officer who is also a defensive handgun trainer. Individualized attention is assured by assigning each student an experienced defensive handgun coach for the duration of the course.

Basic Pistol is a prerequisite for this course.

Topics Covered:

  1. Safety, Safety, Safety
  2. Proper use of the front sight for defensive shooting
  3. Target acquisition and follow through techniques
  4. Exposure to different shooting positions
  5. Reloading handgun using magazines or speed loaders
  1. Weak-hand transition and shooting techniques
  2. Proper use of the holster and drawing from the holster
  3. Shooting from behind cover and concealment
  4. Shooting in low-light conditions (partial darkness)
  5. Using a flashlight with a handgun in low-light conditions

Equipment:

  1. Any centerfire handgun in good operating condition that is suitable for self-defense and fires non-magnum ammunition
    • Example: (.357 Magnum pistol O.K. if .38 Special ammunition is used.)
    • Note: NO single shot handguns or Westen-style "cowboy" single-action revolvers
  2. Approximately 300 rounds of ammunition
  3. Two extra magazines (Semi-automatics) or speed loaders (revolvers)
  4. Two magazine carriers (Semi-automatics) or speed loader pouches (revolvers)
  5. Strong side belt holster (e.g. Right handed shooter wears holster on right hand hip) and a heavy belt (no wimpy dress belts)
    • Note: NO shoulder, cross-draw, inside-the-pants, or Small-of-Back holsters

Requirements:

  1. Eye and ear protection is required on the indoor and outdoor range
  2. You must be a Senior Member and have completed Basic Pistol to enroll
  3. A non-refundable payment of $150.00 is required in advance and in full to register
  4. Strong side belt holster (e.g. Right handed shooter wears holster on right hand hip) and a heavy belt (no wimpy dress belts)
    • Note: NO shoulder, cross-draw, inside-the-pants, or Small-of-Back holsters

Your first chance to enroll for courses in 2008 will be at the General Meeting on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 8:00 pm. Click here for an enrollment form. No applications, either by mail or in person, will be accepted before the night of the January 8th General Meeting.
